Here are some of the tips from the video, and a bonus tip!

1// Look back on your past goals to what insight they have as to why you did or didn’t accomplish them

2// Realize that January 1st is not a magical day. You can make any day January first if you start to take your goals seriously

3// Make your goals work for you. Work with your brain instead of against it

4// Break your larger goals into smaller goals so that you see the progress and feel accomplished throughout the process

5// Give yourself grace when you don’t accomplish everything you want to right away, or when you fail at a goal you had set for the month

6// Write it down! It doesn’t matter if it’s a large or small accomplishment, write down what you’ve succeeded at so that on the hard days you have something to look back on to remind you that you have made progress.

BONUS: Learn more about how you think. Take a Myers Briggs or an Enneagram test to learn something new about how you operate through goals. While these tests are certainly not gold, they do provide nuggets of truth in them that you can use to learn more about how you interact with the world, and in turn how you can make goals that work for you!

What does Stress, Burnout, and Anxiety really look like?

Is your stress level normal or are you getting close to being burnt out? Find out, and how to combat it!!

Whatever stage in life you are in right now there are real reasons why there are so many creatives, and others sharing how they've gone through burn out in the past, or are working through anxiety or burn out right now.

Burnout obviously isn’t a necessity, nor do we want it to be, but if you are feeling some of the below you could be on a path to burnout.

FIRST: BURNOUT CAN LOOK MAY DIFFERENT WAYS. IF YOURS DOESN’T LOOK EXACTLY LIKE EVERYONE ELSES IT’S STILL JUST AS IMPORTANT TO LISTEN TO!

Five plus years ago everything was telling us to keep going, and work for the life that you deserve, don’t ever give up, 80+ hours a week at work is normal. Everyone else is doing it, and so can you!

These were all small lies that added together produced a very unhealthy view of ourselves. If you’re like me, you ended up working too much, and not realizing when enough was enough. I would be five hours into my work day and then I would realize that I haven’t had any water or eaten really anything that day.

You may ask yourself, “those” other people are doing it and they’re fine so why can’t you do it too? Why are you waking up in the middle of the night writing down things for work so that you “don’t forget them”. You’re feeling anxious in the middle of a shopping store? Oh, it must just be because you forgot to eat again, it couldn’t possibly be the stress.

It is unhealthy thoughts like this that lead many to that moment when enough is enough. You have this ah ha moment that you realize that this isn’t normal. You being to peel back layers or realization that those times you couldn’t sleep aren’t normal, and that’s not ok that you felt overwhelmed in the way that you did. Not all stress is healthy stress no matter how many times people tell you it is.

NOW WHAT? NOW THAT YOU KNOW WHAT BURNOUT CAN LOOK LIKE; WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE?

You’ve realized you are too stressed, or that you are working though anxiety, but what do you do now?

This sounds very simple, but many, including myself forget this all of the time…take a moment to close your eyes and breathe.

No matter how the day is going or the year is going, it’s not over. Take a still moment to realize that you’ve been going so hard that you’ve really been latching onto control of something that you truly don't have 100% control over, you. It’s ok that you don’t have that control either because that same stress from wanting to control everything, is the stress you are looking to get rid of and let go of.

I personally believe in God. I believe that I’m made for a specific purpose and that purpose isn’t to be stressed all the time. Now, that realization doesn’t change my circumstances right away, but it is a constant reminder that I believe God’s plan is better than the one I’ve been so fully trying to make happen on my own.

It may be a hard humble pill to swallow, but it’s worth it. Don't feel that you’re an island in this either because there are so many right coming forward with their stories, and when you listen to them everyones is a little different. Many business owners, or those who have accidentally climbed the corporate latter, those who are not super sure how rent is going to be paid, or those who still seem to have it all together have opened up about their struggles with this same topic.

ONE ACTION STEP THAT YOU CAN TAKE TODAY IS BETTER THAN TWO TOMORROW. ONE SMALL STEP, DON’T TRY TO MAKE YOURSELF NOT FEEL BURNT OUT. YOU WON’T HEAL IF YOU TRY TO FORCE YOURSELF TO.

It takes more courage to ask for help than it does to try to do everything on your own. What area of your life would feel a little less chaotic if you took a moment to work on it. This could be as simple as cleaning off your desk. Taking a moment each day to start to move the needle towards balance is so important. Here are some other ideas that you could work on each day:

Take a moment to get bak to the basics and write down your “WHY”.

Take a moment to get back to basics and clean up the environment you live in.

Take a moment to get back to basics, and create some sort of routine for your body so that it knows you are taking care of it when you wake up.

Take a moment to get back to basics, and call or see a friend that you haven’t talked to in a long time.

Take a moment to get back to basics, and reach out to someone who is a professional listener to help you think through things.

Take a moment for your mental and physical health, because if you don’t your body will make you.

I’m always on the hunt for a really good book. I want to learn and grow as a person from a book, I don't want it to only be another book I’ve read that I check off of a list. If you know about the enneagram test, I’m a 3. Meaning I always want to accomplish things! I want to complete goals and make progress. At my best, I have the ability to connect and really want to see people grow and fulfill their passions!! A few other 3’s are Oprah, Tony Blair, Tony Robbins, Reese Witherspoon, etc.

THE ROAD BACK TO YOU - IAN CRON AND SUZANNE STABILE

READ IF: You’re looking to learn more about your own personality and how that connects with others.

To jump off of the above, I’ve found it very helpful to learn about myself and how I find worth if I’m healthy or unhealthy. Now, this isn't the Bible so it’s not perfect, but it’s a fun way to learn how you connect with others. You learn about some of your strengths and weeknesses, and if you’re a healthy you and an unhealthy you how you react at times. I’ve also made so many of my friends take this test! I’m a little obsessed.

THE BIBLE - BY JESUS

READ IF: You’re looking for meaning in you life, or you’re confused about what your purpose in life is

I really got a good chuckle from the author. I find it funny, I mean he created Ostriches what are they for? Anyway, back to the point. The Bible is the most important book in my life. It can’t imagine where I would be without it. I’ve learned about the most important man in history, connected with my creator, and learned about His plans for my life. What more could you ever want from a book. Non fiction with life changing abilities! Number one, would recommend! I also really love the JOURNALING BIBLE that I have because it gives me the freedom to write in the margins without writing over all of the words!

GIRL, WASH YOUR FACE - RACHEL HOLLIS

READ IF: You need to be reminded that you’re not alone in the woman world of not being perfect

This is a more recent love, but I appreciate this book more than I love it. I really like in GIRL, WASH YOUR FACE how she connects and gives real insight into her life. She discusses her family and work life. She is venerable multiple times, but the time that really sticks out to me is when she is talking about how she is a workaholic. I’ve never considered myself that, up until this past year when I realized that’s exactly what I am. I dive sometiems too far into work without even realizing I should come up for air, or food! I’ll work 11hrs and not take a break because “there’s too much to do.” Not ok. It was nice to see another female discuss that in a real way.

LEADERS EAT LAST/ START WITH WHY - SIMON SINEK

READ IF: You’re looking to be a better leader. You’re looking to be a leader that inspires others to be their best.

Flash back to a few years ago when I was a new leader. I was green when it comes to leadership skills, except for seeing some leaders in my life that were wonderful and set a great example, and there were some that I learned what not to do from. Besides that, I was basically winging it. LEADERS EAT LAST really changed the way I thought about leadership. I love the example of good leaders and how they create an environment of safety. They understand that inside vs. outside the organization how safe do we feel at work? How safe do you make your employees feel at work? I also love his other book START WITH WHY because it’s the internal question. What is your why? Why do you do what you do? How does that translate to leadership? All are answered in this book!

5 LOVE LANGUAGES - GARY CHAPMAN

READ IF: You’re looking to learn more about how others in your life receive and give love.

This is the book that helped me look within and realize what I value most in a relationship, both romantic and platonic. It helped me narrow down what is important to me when it comes to my loved one and helped me realize what’s important to them. What my LOVE LANGUAGES are may not be theres and I have to realize and take action on that knowledge. If they receive love by gifts vs. quality time how am I showing them love based upon how they receive it?

It also really helped with understanding the differences between loved one. For example, someone may think they are a quality time person, but find out that how they show love is quality time, but how they receive love is gifts. My mom found that out. It helped our relationship me knowing that, because this whole time I never fully understood why every gift meant so much, because for me gift giving is neither how I’m programed to show or receive love.

Now that I know that I’ve made sure that all gifts for her are very specific! She knows Iove her without gifts, but it strengthens our relationship for me to know that it’s important to her weather she realized it at the time or not.

THE GREAT GATSBY - F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

READ IF: You’re looking to be reminded that whatever you’re going through isn’t as bad as Gatsby

This is one of my favorites when it comes to fiction. I love how sad and joyful it can be all at the same time. I love how some of the characters learn about themselves and life in general, and how some really have never connected with reality or will.

The first time I read this I was in high school, and now whenever I go to a bookstore I’m always on the hunt for a vintage copy of this book. I have this thing about always wanting to “save” old books. I’m positive I’m not the only one doing that!

THE OXFORD SHAKESPEARE THE COMPLETE WORKS - STANLEY WELLS AND GARY TAYLOR

READ IF: You’re looking to expand your horizons, and read one of the greats.

This was back in high school again, just getting into reading for fun and not for school and two authors came across my path thanks to my english teach. Shakespeare and Poe. Both of these authors changed the way I saw books. I love that Shakespeare when he couldn’t find the word, just made it up, I loved how Poe didn’t hide his feelings, and I loved how they both took them wherever the story was. This book changed the way I thought about reading.

THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS - C.S. LEWIS

READ IF: You need a reminder of how we sometimes get in our own way, and how easily humans overlook the obvious.

This is a once a year at least, read for me. When I first read it, I was a little confused because the premise of the book is one daemon writing to his trainee pretty much. When they say “the enemy” it’s God, not Satan. Satan is the father. I know, it sounds backwards. The main reason I love this book is because of the obvious things that we, as humans, either blame on Satan that is really just us putting roadblocks in our own way, or other things that we do as humans that are obviously dumb, but that we don't realize are dumb.

THE TOTAL MONEY MAKEOVER - DAVE RAMSEY

READ IF: You’re looking to get out of debt/ control your finances.

Looking to correct or verify your finances? This book is the one I used for pretty much mu life. Now, I’m not perfect, and don’t tell Dave but I have a credit card *hides face, but I really do try to follow many of the principles in this book.

There are so many good ways to live that are so counter culture, but so helpful! My favorite quote of Dave Ramsey is “Live like no one else, so that later you can live and give like no one else.” Genius!!

READ IF: You need some home inspiration, or you want to be reminded that you’re not the only one who doubts their God given talents.

Love them! I basically want to grow up and be Joanna. I love how she cares for everyone and has learned to trust God and her instincts. I appreciate how her relationship with Chip brings out aspects of their personalities that separately they may not have trusted themselves to.

I also love how much she loves her children. She has found a way to be a woman in business, a mother, and a wife. More power to her!!

Weeks all blend together while we’re not paying attention. This next week is one of the most famous weeks of the year. It’s the beginning! It’s the “start over” that many focus on, but each week really is a start over isn’t it? In the spirit of those two thoughts, let’s combine forces and focus on gratitude and intentional living this week all all of the weeks thereafter.

PS: One easy way to make sure that you remember this week is by documenting it. Take out a journal and write down at least a scribble each day thinking over your successes and lessons you learned.

If you’ve never journaled before and need a place to start, try “stream of consciousness” journaling for 5 minutes when you wake up, or before you go to bed.

MONDAY

Monday’s can be hard. Today be grateful for a step you’ve taken in the right direction. You may be at the start of the work week, but you can start it off well or you can start it off by focusing on not the 20. There is a saying that speaks on focusing on the 20 that gets you the 80. What that means, if you’ve never heard it, is that 20 precent of whatever you’re doing is going to give you 80 percent of the result. So what percent are you focused on?

You’re in the week now, not quite to the middle, but you’re making progress. Today be grateful for what you do have as opposed to what you don’t. In today’s society we have the freedom to make choices. Think of how different that is than two hundred years ago. Think of how many resources you have in front of you right now. The device you’re on has more information than anyone has ever had before at their fingertips.

A moment to exhale. Today don’t focus on the stress from life, but on a day of self care. Take that bubble bath that is so popular under this category, or take a moment to remember your mental health. If you’re not 100% that’s ok, give yourself grace today. THURSDAY

Today be grateful for loved ones. Take a moment today to take the time and be intentional about connection. Call a loved one on the phone or take it a step further and write a snail mail letter to send to them. Think about how many sacrifices friends and family have made to see you or to take time out of their busy lives to go out for a coffee. People and time are the resources that are the two most important not to waste! Be grateful for those you have in your life that are “your people”.

FRIDAY

Look how fast that came! It’s already here and it feels like just yesterday it was Sunday. Today focus to be grateful for all that you have learned from this week. The intention that you had around this week’s decision and plans.

This week you thought about what you wanted to do and were grateful for many aspects we tend to take for granted, and look how easy that was. You’re stretching those grateful muscles and creating a habit. It all starts in the decision to be grateful. You’ve got this!

SATURDAY

Today do an act of gratitude. Impact someone elses life with what you’re doing. This week was a start week of remembering to be grateful for what you have and don’t have. There are times that we miss that second part. Being grateful for what you don’t have is just as important as being grateful for what you do have! Be grateful that you have the money and the time that you have, by doing something small or big for another person.

Work on the intention piece by buying the person behind you in the drive through line their food, or another person’s coffee at Starbucks. Offer to cook for a friend or family member so that they don’t have to worry about dinner tonight.

Do something today expecting nothing in return.

WHY DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT

Have you ever started a project and then stopped half way though? I know I have. You start out with such excitement, that child like excitement that nothing can stop you and you’re going to do amazing at whatever you set out to do, and then something changes.

Either something goes wrong, or you break something, or you start to understand why “the path less traveled” is less traveled, and you get discouraged.

Done is better than perfect because in those moments of self doubt you can start to become an unintentional perfectionist.

You give yourself the excuses of why something can’t be finished, and why you're not the most qualified person to do this project, or lead these people. You doubt your abilities and your “voice” in the matter.

However, and this is a big however…what if you just did it!

I mean if Niki can use that slogan, so can you! What if you stopped waiting and just started doing. What if you finished project after project, and just kept doing that? Imagine how many projects you could finish within the next year if you didn’t constantly have to have the project be “perfect” before you presented it.

That’s the real secret, because while you’re out there doing project after project, you’re learning. You’re learning your voice when it comes to that subject, you’re learning what you enjoy about your job, or what career field you want to go into. You’re finishing those books that you never thought you would finish.

Looking back next year at this same time, imagine with me for a moment if you just finished projects!

How amazing would you feel! You would have so many new projects completed, and don’t forget you can always go back and fix mistakes you made in the previous project with the new projects. When you find a subject that you really click with, start doing projects that help you get closer to that “perfection”, but remember that true perfection you’re never going to reach.

That that, digest it, and keep going! “Keep moving forward” as the Robinsons would say!

“Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game” as Hillary Duff would say. Wow, I’m really full of tv quotes today!

Anyways, done is better than perfect, because you’re doing more than most will! You’re finishing projects and books, and ideas you’ve had in your brain. You’re not second guessing yourself on every decision.

Yes, you’ll mess up sometimes doing this, but also who cares! You’re also learning from all of those times you tried and failed! Imagine the scenario of Edison with the lightbulb, he only had to get it right once! He found many many ways not to get it right.

Go and do that too! Try out those projects you’ve been storing in your brain because, by starting those you’re already ahead of the game! When/If you fail, get back up and try again, because done is better than perfect!

Love this idea! 2018 was a year for me where I really tried to focus on being grateful. With everything that happened this year there were definitely ups and downs to me being grateful, but I tried really hard not to lose sight of that goal. I wish I had though of this GRATITUDE JOURNAL. Each week it helps you keep on track with soemtign that you’re grateful for. If you’re grateful, your mind doesn’t have the space to think about other things at the same time! What are you grateful for?

We all want to be healthier, and happier, but a bad night sleep, for me at least, really will get in the way of that! Honestly when I’m feeling down, or have to look at a computer screen for countless hours in a day I will take whatever I can get that will help me be able to focus and get done what I need to. The light in this ENERGY LAMP can not only help your mood, but it can help keep or reset your circadian rhythm which will help you sleep better.

If you’re still not 100% sure what to get, give a little of everything. I love doing this when I’m traveling because it can be easily broken down and built back when the time for presents arises! Real Ways to Find Peace in College When You're Feeling Burt Out

College can be overwhelming! What are ways you can get yourself out of being burnt out? Here's what I did.

I am so proud of you for continuing your education! It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a local college or an away school, it doesn't matter if you’re 45 years old or 17 years old: College can be overwhelming!

So, you’re in college, trying your hardest and feeling burnt out! I know that feeling all too well.

Let’s start with a little background. When I first went to college I was 17, and I just moved out of my parents house into an apartment with two strangers. I didn’t have a car or any way of getting around other than the bus that took me from my apartment to school. I watched wayyyy too much of the TV show Crime Scene Investigation, and my “new apartment” ended up giving me mold poisoning. Life was grand!

Oh also, in my first semester in my first every college class I got all grades. By that I mean, I got everything from an “F” to eventually an “A” on projects and tests.

Boy was I burnt out and it was only the beginning of college. Now what!! Looking back and thinking how I got through that funk of the first year, I took some real steps without realizing it. Those steps I completely tribute to my college experience ending the way it did. By the end of college I love it! I had a community of close friends, and I was financially free.

Here are the steps I took. They really helped me, and I believe if you stick to them, they can help you too! This post contains affiliate links to some of the resources that I used in college, and that I use today. I’ve linked them because they really have helped me either save time or remember! FIRST STEP: REALITY

Let’s start with an exhale, and a reality check: If you’re feeling burnt out admit that to yourself!

Don’t try to hide the fact that you’re feeling overwhelmed from everyone around you, including yourself, because it’s not healthy. It isn’t helping you move into an actionable state of mind if all of your focus is on convincing yourself that you’re “fine”.

Have a real moment with yourself and allow yourself to take in the fact that you’re feeling burnt right now.

That’s the key word though at the end, did you catch it? Right now! Right now you’re feeling burnt but it’s temporary. You don’t have to feel burnt out and overwhelmed. You aren’t in control of the fact that you’re feeling burnt, but you are the one in control of if you allow yourself to stay in this mindset.

That’s what it is too, it’s a mindset of feeling overwhelmed. You are strong and wonderfully made, you are not an accident and you can choose a different outcome!!

Why is this step important?: Because if you don’t take a moment to feel how you’re feeling, how are you meant to work through that. If you continue to super woman through, and not allow yourself to think through your feelings, you’re not helping yourself grow!

STEP TWO: GET IT OUT

Write down all of the reasons that you’re feeling overwhelmed. For me, my list looked like this:

I Don’t feel prepared, I don’t have a way to get around, I don’t have my friends with me at school anymore, I don’t have an income, how am I paying for school?, I need to get out of this apartment, I need to eat something other than pasta, CSI is depressing.

All of those were so real to me! It’s important to write down all that you have to do or all that is frustrating to be able to work through it. If you don’t articulate what’s making you feel burnt out, you can’t make steps towards feeling less burnt!

Also journaling is a sub-step that is important. I find that when I journal regularly I find out my emotions that I didn’t realize I was feeling. I find out the secrets that were hiding in the back of my mind that I wasn’t realizing were the cause of my anxiety, or my stress.

STEP THREE: HAVE FOOD IN THE HOUSE.

This sounds like such an odd step, because how does this make you feel less burnt out? Have you ever been really hungry. That horrible state where you can’t think properly because you’re so hungry, and because you’re so hungry everything else seems worse? I have! Take care of a physical need of yours! It will help you be able to correctly think through what you can and can’t control in your situation. Eat a good breakfast or a good lunch and then start to think about the next step.

Why is this step important?: Because a healthy you is a clearly thinking you. Because it’s important to take care of your health when you have it. Take precautionary steps to eat healthy now and create those habits for later when you’re working 10-12hr days and don’t feel like eating healthy. You’ll be much more inclined to not go through the drive through if you know you have healthy ingredients at home that you can use for dinner.

STEP FOUR: ONE THING YOU CAN DO NOW

One small step for college student…I’m only kidding, but think about it. What’s one step that you can do that will start to make you feel less burnt.

Can you join a study group for a class that you’re feeling overwhelmed in? This will help you get some perspective from others and will give you a little socialization.

Can you look for a cheap and safe car on craigslist or another used website that will give you more freedom? Can you start to look into scholarships that can help pay for school?

Can you go outside and study? See the sunlight. It really will help your mood without you realizing.

Accomplish one thing you’ve had on your “to do list” for a while. You’ll feel so much better!

STEP FIVE: GET AROUND PEOPLE

THIS STEP WILL MAKE A HUGE IMPACT!

However, this is the step that will also cost you the most. This is the step that costs your your pride, and your fear, but in return gives you companionship and joy. You are not made to be an island! In fact, when you act like you are, and don’t associate yourself with friends or loved ones regularly it effects your mental health.

Let’s keep using me as the example of the “don’t do this!” I’m sitting in my apartment, watching the depressing CSI hours on end for the entire first year of college, not making any effort to be around people.

Let’s also take first year me and compare her with second year me. Second year me did the awkward thing and showed up to an on campus group. I knew no one at the time, but I showed up! Which for me was huge at the time! I sat in the back and didn't say much, but after I went out and signed up for a weekly group.

That one step made all the difference! I ended up in that group, finding people that are still some of my closest friends today! It also took me a few times and a few groups before I “clicked”, so if you don’t make life long friends from the first group you join, it’s ok! Keep trying, you’ll find them! There is no way in college that you’re the only one looking for a group to be around!

STEP SIX: YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE

When you’re in a season of new, you’re not the only one in that season, especially at college! In fact when you’re a freshman, you literally have an entire new class of freshmen looking around like you are with maps. None of you know how to get to class easily, and you’re all not sure if you like the campus food.

There is a lie that is put into your mind when you feel alone. That lie is not true! You have many comrades around you also walking the longest way possible to class because they aren’t sure where to go. Don’t believe the lies

There are moments in college that it can feel overwhelming, but it’s so worth it! There are experiences in college the you would never have the opportunity to experience if you were not right where you are. There is a purpose to this! Keep the people around you that encourage you to be better! You can do this!

STEP SEVEN: GIVE YOURSELF RESOURCES

I wrote a whole other post about resources pertaining to life, but the same applies to college. Don’t let the college book store fool you. You can find that book elsewhere! You don’t have to spend the $200 on the book, share with a friend and that also gives you a reason to hang out at the beginning of the friendship. One of the biggest resources I found after college that I wish I had in college was this type of notebook! I love that notebook, because it’s the small simple act of being able to move the pages around that doesn’t cause me to have to think about where I’m writing.

Remember growing up and having those notebooks that put the dividers in it for you? I always hated those because I would have one section where it was all full, and another where I had written on two pages. Now I have the freedom to do what I want with the notebook the world is my oyster and I’m in!
