WHY DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT

Stop overthinking and get things done! Here's one really good reason why done is better than perfect! #makinggoals #betterthanperfect #dontgiveup

Have you ever started a project and then stopped half way though? I know I have. You start out with such excitement, that child like excitement that nothing can stop you and you’re going to do amazing at whatever you set out to do, and then something changes.

Either something goes wrong, or you break something, or you start to understand why “the path less traveled” is less traveled, and you get discouraged.

Done is better than perfect because in those moments of self doubt you can start to become an unintentional perfectionist.

You give yourself the excuses of why something can’t be finished, and why you're not the most qualified person to do this project, or lead these people. You doubt your abilities and your “voice” in the matter.

However, and this is a big however…what if you just did it!

I mean if Niki can use that slogan, so can you! What if you stopped waiting and just started doing. What if you finished project after project, and just kept doing that? Imagine how many projects you could finish within the next year if you didn’t constantly have to have the project be “perfect” before you presented it.

That’s the real secret, because while you’re out there doing project after project, you’re learning. You’re learning your voice when it comes to that subject, you’re learning what you enjoy about your job, or what career field you want to go into. You’re finishing those books that you never thought you would finish.

Looking back next year at this same time, imagine with me for a moment if you just finished projects!

How amazing would you feel! You would have so many new projects completed, and don’t forget you can always go back and fix mistakes you made in the previous project with the new projects. When you find a subject that you really click with, start doing projects that help you get closer to that “perfection”, but remember that true perfection you’re never going to reach.

That that, digest it, and keep going! “Keep moving forward” as the Robinsons would say!

“Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game” as Hillary Duff would say. Wow, I’m really full of tv quotes today!

Anyways, done is better than perfect, because you’re doing more than most will! You’re finishing projects and books, and ideas you’ve had in your brain. You’re not second guessing yourself on every decision.

Yes, you’ll mess up sometimes doing this, but also who cares! You’re also learning from all of those times you tried and failed! Imagine the scenario of Edison with the lightbulb, he only had to get it right once! He found many many ways not to get it right.

Go and do that too! Try out those projects you’ve been storing in your brain because, by starting those you’re already ahead of the game! When/If you fail, get back up and try again, because done is better than perfect!

December is notoriously a bad time for self care. There are family members in town that you haven’t seen in a while, there are so many deadlines at work to get caught up on before you have a few days off. You need to makes sure all the food is prepared and the house is clean for that one aunt who will always notice if her present from three years ago isn’t on display. It’s a hard season for self care, but it’s one of the most important because you also have weather chaining and with that comes illness at work. Here are a few ideas for you or a loved one this Holiday season to keep on the self care train! Don’t jump off, end the year strong!

There are affiliate links in this post. All that means is that if you purchase the items, at no cost to you, I would receive a small amount. That amount helps keep this blog running!

BAMBOO ADJUSTABLE BATH TRAY

This is the time of year that I’m all about that self care bubble bath or bath salt. It’s cold outside and your tired from running around. You’re looking for the best present for the work party, and you just need to exhale! This does BATH TRAY that for you. Taking a bath clears your mind and allows you to take a moment to relax, don't think about work, just let your mind wonder. It’s also good for your mental health to not always be “on.”

CEDAR AND VANILLA SOY CANDLE

While you’re enjoying your luxurious bath it is important to be relaxed! I also really love coming home and lighting A SCENTED CANDLE. I love either the crackling wick candles or soy candles, if they can be both I’m always in! This one on top of all of that burns for 60hrs before you even need to think about a new candle!! Amazing! And it smells like vanilla, a good choice for a year round candle!

GOOD DAYS START WITH GRATITUDE: A 52 WEEK JOURNAL

Love this idea! 2018 was a year for me where I really tried to focus on being grateful. With everything that happened this year there were definitely ups and downs to me being grateful, but I tried really hard not to lose sight of that goal. I wish I had though of this GRATITUDE JOURNAL. Each week it helps you keep on track with soemtign that you’re grateful for. If you’re grateful, your mind doesn’t have the space to think about other things at the same time! What are you grateful for?

FITBIT CHARGE THREE: A WATCH WITH A SLEEP TRACKER

We all want to be healthier, and happier, but a bad night sleep, for me at least, really will get in the way of that! With the FITBIT 3 you can start to learn about how you sleep and what your sleeping patters look like. Knowing how you sleep and when your rem cycles are is important. Set yourself up for awake you, by sleeping when and how works best for your body!

FRUIT INFUSED WATER BOTTLE

I for one am notoriously bad at drinking water. I know I need to, but I just don’t want to do it. I pretty much have to trick myself into drinking water on a daily basis. I would much much rather drink coffee, but I’m told that woman can not live by coffee alone, although I will continue to try. For those times that I do need to drink water, I really love FRUIT INFUSED IN WATER. I makes it feel like a better drink, because water really just tastes like nothing if you add nothing! Add some strawberries, or cucumbers and lemons and I’ll think about drinking water.

LIGHT THERAPY ENERGY LAMP

Honestly when I’m feeling down, or have to look at a computer screen for countless hours in a day I will take whatever I can get that will help me be able to focus and get done what I need to. I’ve seen this lamp pop up a few times when it comes to items that can help you mentally! We all know different lights effect our brains differently. The light in this ENERGY LAMP can not only help your mood, but it can help keep or reset your circadian rhythm which will help you sleep better.

A PAMPER KIT

If you’re still not 100% sure what to get, give a little of everything. I love doing this when I’m traveling because it can be easily broken down and built back when the time for presents arises! Also, it’s a great gift for the traveler in your life because it’s a bunch of smaller items they can pick and choose to take with them on their next adventure.

I use this LUSH R&B on my hair almost every day! It’s a wonder product for me, gets rid of the friz and has my hair looking healthy and smooth! Add in the LUSH SLEEPY LOTION for a better night’s sleep, a JELLY FACE MASK, some essential COCOA BUTTER LIP MOISTERIZER, and some WICKED DEEP RED NAIL POLISH and you’re ready for a night on the town, or in watching all of the Hallmark Movies you can find!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY SELF CARE!

Real Ways to Find Peace in College When You're Feeling Burt Out

College can be overwhelming! What are ways you can get yourself out of being burnt out? Here's what I did.

I am so proud of you for continuing your education! It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a local college or an away school, it doesn't matter if you’re 45 years old or 17 years old: College can be overwhelming!

So, you’re in college, trying your hardest and feeling burnt out! I know that feeling all too well.

Let’s start with a little background. When I first went to college I was 17, and I just moved out of my parents house into an apartment with two strangers. I didn’t have a car or any way of getting around other than the bus that took me from my apartment to school. I watched wayyyy too much of the TV show Crime Scene Investigation, and my “new apartment” ended up giving me mold poisoning. Life was grand!

Oh also, in my first semester in my first every college class I got all grades. By that I mean, I got everything from an “F” to eventually an “A” on projects and tests.

Boy was I burnt out and it was only the beginning of college. Now what!! Looking back and thinking how I got through that funk of the first year, I took some real steps without realizing it. Those steps I completely tribute to my college experience ending the way it did. By the end of college I love it! I had a community of close friends, and I was financially free.

Here are the steps I took. They really helped me, and I believe if you stick to them, they can help you too! This post contains affiliate links to some of the resources that I used in college, and that I use today. I’ve linked them because they really have helped me either save time or remember! If you do purchase them I would get a small amount, at no cost to you. Personally my favorite is the notebook at the end because it’s made a huge impact on my day to day!

FIRST STEP: REALITY

Let’s start with an exhale, and a reality check: If you’re feeling burnt out admit that to yourself!

Don’t try to hide the fact that you’re feeling overwhelmed from everyone around you, including yourself, because it’s not healthy. It isn’t helping you move into an actionable state of mind if all of your focus is on convincing yourself that you’re “fine”.

Have a real moment with yourself and allow yourself to take in the fact that you’re feeling burnt right now.

That’s the key word though at the end, did you catch it? Right now! Right now you’re feeling burnt but it’s temporary. You don’t have to feel burnt out and overwhelmed. You aren’t in control of the fact that you’re feeling burnt, but you are the one in control of if you allow yourself to stay in this mindset.

That’s what it is too, it’s a mindset of feeling overwhelmed. You are strong and wonderfully made, you are not an accident and you can choose a different outcome!!

Why is this step important?: Because if you don’t take a moment to feel how you’re feeling, how are you meant to work through that. If you continue to super woman through, and not allow yourself to think through your feelings, you’re not helping yourself grow!

STEP TWO: GET IT OUT

Write down all of the reasons that you’re feeling overwhelmed. For me, my list looked like this:

I Don’t feel prepared, I don’t have a way to get around, I don’t have my friends with me at school anymore, I don’t have an income, how am I paying for school?, I need to get out of this apartment, I need to eat something other than pasta, CSI is depressing.

All of those were so real to me! It’s important to write down all that you have to do or all that is frustrating to be able to work through it. If you don’t articulate what’s making you feel burnt out, you can’t make steps towards feeling less burnt!

Also journaling is a sub-step that is important. I find that when I journal regularly I find out my emotions that I didn’t realize I was feeling. I find out the secrets that were hiding in the back of my mind that I wasn’t realizing were the cause of my anxiety, or my stress.

STEP THREE: HAVE FOOD IN THE HOUSE.

This sounds like such an odd step, because how does this make you feel less burnt out? Have you ever been really hungry. That horrible state where you can’t think properly because you’re so hungry, and because you’re so hungry everything else seems worse? I have! Take care of a physical need of yours! It will help you be able to correctly think through what you can and can’t control in your situation. Eat a good breakfast or a good lunch and then start to think about the next step.

Why is this step important?: Because a healthy you is a clearly thinking you. Because it’s important to take care of your health when you have it. Take precautionary steps to eat healthy now and create those habits for later when you’re working 10-12hr days and don’t feel like eating healthy. You’ll be much more inclined to not go through the drive through if you know you have healthy ingredients at home that you can use for dinner.

STEP FOUR: ONE THING YOU CAN DO NOW

One small step for college student…I’m only kidding, but think about it. What’s one step that you can do that will start to make you feel less burnt.

Can you join a study group for a class that you’re feeling overwhelmed in? This will help you get some perspective from others and will give you a little socialization.

Can you look for a cheap and safe car on craigslist or another used website that will give you more freedom? Can you start to look into scholarships that can help pay for school?

Can you go outside and study? See the sunlight. It really will help your mood without you realizing.

Accomplish one thing you’ve had on your “to do list” for a while. You’ll feel so much better!

STEP FIVE: GET AROUND PEOPLE

THIS STEP WILL MAKE A HUGE IMPACT!

However, this is the step that will also cost you the most. This is the step that costs your your pride, and your fear, but in return gives you companionship and joy. You are not made to be an island! In fact, when you act like you are, and don’t associate yourself with friends or loved ones regularly it effects your mental health.

Let’s keep using me as the example of the “don’t do this!” I’m sitting in my apartment, watching the depressing CSI hours on end for the entire first year of college, not making any effort to be around people.

Let’s also take first year me and compare her with second year me. Second year me did the awkward thing and showed up to an on campus group. I knew no one at the time, but I showed up! Which for me was huge at the time! I sat in the back and didn't say much, but after I went out and signed up for a weekly group.

That one step made all the difference! I ended up in that group, finding people that are still some of my closest friends today! It also took me a few times and a few groups before I “clicked”, so if you don’t make life long friends from the first group you join, it’s ok! Keep trying, you’ll find them! There is no way in college that you’re the only one looking for a group to be around!

STEP SIX: YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE

When you’re in a season of new, you’re not the only one in that season, especially at college! In fact when you’re a freshman, you literally have an entire new class of freshmen looking around like you are with maps. None of you know how to get to class easily, and you’re all not sure if you like the campus food.

There is a lie that is put into your mind when you feel alone. That lie is not true! You have many comrades around you also walking the longest way possible to class because they aren’t sure where to go. Don’t believe the lies

There are moments in college that it can feel overwhelming, but it’s so worth it! There are experiences in college the you would never have the opportunity to experience if you were not right where you are. There is a purpose to this! Keep the people around you that encourage you to be better! You can do this!

STEP SEVEN: GIVE YOURSELF RESOURCES

I wrote a whole other post about resources pertaining to life, but the same applies to college. Don’t let the college book store fool you. You can find that book elsewhere! You don’t have to spend the $200 on the book, share with a friend and that also gives you a reason to hang out at the beginning of the friendship. One of the biggest resources I found after college that I wish I had in college was this type of notebook! I love that notebook, because it’s the small simple act of being able to move the pages around that doesn’t cause me to have to think about where I’m writing.

Remember growing up and having those notebooks that put the dividers in it for you? I always hated those because I would have one section where it was all full, and another where I had written on two pages. Now I have the freedom to do what I want with the notebook the world is my oyster and I’m in!

Self Care : What do you think?

As the official American Self Care week comes to an end I would really love to start a conversation about what you think about self care. Do you think it’s an important topic to discuss?

As the official American Self Care week comes to an end I would really love to start a conversation in the comments about what you think about self care. Do you think it’s an important topic to discuss? Do you think it’s something that is too over looked? Do you think it’s something that people are spending too much time focusing on?

The definition of Self Care has been something that has been growing this whole year; it’s something I’ve had to learn how to make a priority in my life, literally for my health. If you do self care on a more consistent basis, what have you found as the most challenging aspects, and what have you learned this year?

I would love to know and discuss what areas you find important and what areas you find as more of a “if you can.”

Let’s talk!

7 Self Care Posts That Could Change Your Life

Make sure that you’re giving your best self during your day, by making sure you’re bringing your best self to your work life and personal life. These are some of my favorite posts how to do that!

I love self care, and I’m so proud that there is actually a week in the year dedicated to talking about self care as a subject. Closing out this work week of self care, I want to pay homage to those posts around the web that I truly love reading.

This year has been such a learning experience for me in that aspect. These posts are great reminders to treat yourself kind. Make sure that you’re giving your best self during your day, by making sure you’re bringing your best self to your work life and personal life. Here are a few helpful posts I’ve read recently!

SEVEN DAYS OF KINDNESS CHALLENGE

Intentional Kindness, YES! Going about your day for seven days and intetionally finding ways to improve someone else’s life. That moment where you know you’ve done the right thing and helped another person out is just as much self care as many other aspects are. Self care also comes when you connect and find something out about someone else that you can help with!

10 WAYS TO RESET YOUR MIND

My two favorites in this post were: asking for help, because that’s always something that I struggle with and its nice to see that I’m not the only one out there still learning this principle, and getting more sleep. I am a crazy coffee lady, and sometimes I drink coffee late at night, which at the very least keeps my mind up. However, there are also days that I drink a cup of hot sleepy time tea and have a wonderful night of deep sleep. I want to do the second of those options more!

25 THINGS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE NUMBER OF LIKES YOU GET ON INSTAGRAM

Love this! What great reminders about what’s more important than getting any “likes”. We definitely should all be more like moms on instagram! They’re the best!

SOOTHING SELF CARE FOR WHEN ANXIETY HITS

I had never had anxiety until about two months ago now, and it is not fun! If you are like me and are lucky enough to not have to suffer consistently with anxiety, thank God! If you do suffer more frequently with anxiety, I really love these tips.

For those of you who have suffered frequently or infrequently, what tends to bring anxiety on for you? What tips have you come up with that help you bring yourself back down?

WHY FORGIVENESS IS REALLY AN ACT OF SELF LOVE

I remember the first time I realized that by letting go of the anger I had for being wronged in a situation I was really letting both of us free. My mind was blown. I had never looked at forgiveness that way before. The Self Care freedom that came with that was so exhilarating. I didn’t have to hold onto hurt or anger. I was going to set both of us free to live our lives!

SELF CARE IS NOT SELFISH

I was obsessed with this post from the first quote. I agree that Self Care doesn’t mean that you’re being selfish. You have to learn how to “unplug” yourself sometimes and rest before you get back to work! We all want to be our best selves in every aspect of our lives, and in order to be your best self, you have to also care about yourself!

SELF-CARE TIPS FROM A SELF-CARE MENTOR

IN LOVE. Again this was one of those posts that I was completely sucked into and couldn't stop reading. I love that It’s an interview with someone who has self care as one of their main focuses, even for their work. These were two of my favorite quotes “Burnout is a real, dangerous thing and so is autopilot” and “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” These remind me so much of my post about having no more pie.

Great Stuff!! What posts do you love and read over and over again that remind you to take care of yourself? Leave a comment with your favorite self care post from this year!

Starting With You: Self Care Ideas

Self Care isn’t about putting yourself above everyone else, but in order for your to give the best of yourself to others, work and your relationships, you have to care about yourself just as much as you would care about someone else.

With this week being National Self Care Week it’s important to take a moment to think about the “why” and the “what” of self care. Self-Care isn’t about putting yourself above everyone else, but in order for your to give the best of yourself to others, work, and your relationships, you have to care about yourself just as much as you would care about someone else.

Imagine it like this. You own a car and you put gas in it, continuing to drive it around town. Eventually the check engine light comes on, but instead of taking that as a warning sign you figure something must just be wrong with the signals in your car so you keep driving. You don’t get the oil changed, you don’t check the fluid levels, you don’t check your tire pressure, you just keep driving. You will literally end up driving your car into the ground because you didn’t care for it enough for it to be capable to care for you.

It’s the same with humans. If you don't take those warning signs you know are your personal warning signs of: working too much, not sleeping enough, not eating correctly, etc., your body is going to break down and make you slow down.

Self-Care, no matter the busyness of life, is a necessity. I firmly believe self-care is in three stages. mental, physical and spiritual. If you only focus on one of those you will cause the three legged stool to fall over. You need to balance out the three evenly in order to have a balanced life.

MENTAL SELF CARE IDEAS

  • Deep clean one room in your home

That feeling when you walk into your space and you know it’s clean is so wonderful. Your mind has more space to be creative or work more effectively if it’s also not worried about having to keep track of where things are or where they need to go.

  • Bake Breakfast

There’s nothing like coffee and a pastry. Morning you will be so excited when they wake up and there is a loaf of banana nut bread, or blueberry muffins to take for the commute to work. You can do this on Sunday night so that for the entire week you don’t even have to think about it. You know that you’re covered for breakfast.

  • Say “No”

Do not feel guilty about this one! It’s actually the opposite. You’re taking care of yourself and paying attention to your body. You know if you’re so tired that you don't really have the energy to go to that party or out to dinner. Listen to your body before it makes you listen. Saying “no” is ok!

PHYSICAL SELF CARE IDEAS

  • Learn one new piece of equipment at the gym

One of the reasons that many don’t go to the gym is because it’s intimidating to look at all of the machines and wonder “what even is that?” Learn one new piece of equipment at the gym so the next time you’re there you already know how to use it!

  • Go outside during golden hour

Go outside and take a walk, don’t go with your cellphone (although this is the best time of day for photography). Go outside just to be outside, see the sunset or watch the sunrise. Take a walk literally around the block to pay attention to the leaves and breath in the cool air.

  • Check to see if you’re due for any doctors appointments

Not everything about self care has to do with bubble baths, although those are wonderful! There are aspects of self care that are important in different ways. Check to see when your last eye appointment, or physical was. Are you due for a new one?

SPIRITUAL SELF CARE IDEAS

  • Take a look inside

When was the last time you had a really hard laugh? What were two things that you did this week that brought you energy? Write down your answers. Knowing those helps guide you towards your larger lifetime goals.

  • What are you listening to?

What’s actually important to you? What to know…check what you’re spending your time on. Are you listening to what the world is telling you is important, or are you sticking with what you know is important. Whose opinion matters more?

  • Realize that it’s ok to practice self-care

I don’t want to start any controversy, but I read an article recently that pretty much bashed self-care for Christians. It was talking about how self-care isn’t of God because you’re not relying on Him, you’re doing other things to function. I personally feel that person had the wrong definition of self-care.

I fully rely on God and I truly believe what He has planned for me will come to pass, and nothing I’m doing when I’m taking care of myself is anti-God. There will always be the potential of the “too much gene” and I do believe you can over self-care, but the actual act of self care isn’t wrong. How can you be your best self for God if you aren’t taking a sabbath and resting. God rested on the 7th day, why would I think I’m better than He is? Why would I feel that I can handle more without asking for help or taking a moment to breathe?

7 Ways To Change Your Mindset

What you think is what you will become. That is how powerful your mind is! Improve your mindset in simple ways! - AVintageJoy

What you think is so important because, what you focus on you will become. How powerful is that! The more time you spend focused on your goals the closer you will get to them, and the more time you focus on the waters around the more you will start to sink.

How beautiful that the mind is that powerful. That if we are focused on the beauty in life and how wonderful it is outside, when the snow falls, you will love winter! And how beautiful is it that our minds are always evolving. What we think today can grow tomorrow. It can grow deeper and more solid and become a belief or it could start to change and alter our views on a subject.

Here are some action items that you can start today to improve how you think.

  1. Talk to yourself don't listen to yourself

  2. Take a walk around the block

  3. It can be a bad moment, but it doesn't have to be a bad day

  4. Pay attention to your self talk

  5. Give to others

  6. Give to yourself

  7. Write it down

1. TALK TO YOURSELF. DON'T LISTEN TO YOURSELF

When I first heard this, it was one of those mind blowing moments. Yes, it may sound like something on instagram that you would scroll past, but it has helped me personally. When we talk to ourselves out loud we end up saying different things than we would if you were just listening to yourself. Those negative thoughts about your own talents or a situation sound wrong when you say them out loud. You also realize that it's not a passing thought, you start to change how you're thinking because you realize what you're thinking.

If you start to feel anxious about life, talking to yourself and telling yourself the accurate information is so much healthier than listening to your self talk when you’re not in the best metal state to be listening to yourself.

2. TAKE A WALK AROUND THE BLOCK

It doesn't matter if you're at home or at work, take a moment to step outside and literally walk around the block. Getting the fresh air, away from any computer or cell phone helps your mind to start to clear. That daydreaming part of yourself slowly starts to emerge, and it's good for your body in general to be out in the sun.

3. IT CAN BE A BAD MOMENT, BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A BAD DAY

When something just goes wrong it doesn't have to define your entire day. If you break something it doesn't have to now have your entire day be about that one moment where something broke. Taking each moment for what they are helps you to not focus on the same moment when it no longer exists.

4. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SELF TALK

Realizing what you say to others and yourself is half the battle. When you take a step back and realize the amount of grace that you may not be giving to yourself it is such a shame. You are wonderfully created.

There is not another like you that ever was or ever will be, how amazing is that!! The purpose of your life only you can fulfill and that's a wonderful thing! Take a moment to think about that! Your self talk should motivate you to work towards your goals, whatever they may be. You are the only you that will ever you! And in the most wonderful way, be proud of that.

5. GIVE TO OTHERS

Improve your thinking, by not thinking of yourself at all! The next time you're getting a coffee purchase the coffee for the next person in line. When you're at the grocery store, purchase some extra breakfast bars to give to someone in need. This one will be soley based on motive if you succeed. Take yourself out of the equation and do something purely for the benefit of someone else! You will have the wonderful reward of feeling refreshed!

6. GIVE TO YOURSELF

Give yourself resources! IF you want to learn about flying a plane, pick up a book! If you want to lear about how to be the best (fill in the blank) reach out to someone you admire that's doing it! Ask your friends to give advice on a step they think you could take to walk in the right direction. If nothing changes, nothing changes!

This doesn’t have to be a big step, but if you take one step today towards your goals that’s a step that not everyone else took today!

7. WRITE IT DOWN

Take your thoughts seriously by writing down what they are and where you want them to be. If you want to have the correct mindset on work or school or a reminder of your "why" you may want to write something like: "I'm working to be able to support myself through school in order to have less dept." or "I'm working for God, not for the praise of man."

Write it down and stick it on the back of your front door, that way you see it every day before you head out. You can write it down in a bullet journal . I use this bullet journal, or it can become something that you say out loud to yourself in order to start your day in the right state of mind.

"7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." - Galatians 6: 7-9
