Have a More Productive Hour of Work

The way you think about an hour of work can change the way you work. You can have a more productive hour of work depending on what you idea of a work hour is.

The way you think about an hour of work can change the way you work. You can have a more productive hour of work by working for twenty minutes than you would have had if you had worked the entire hour.

Two months ago I was having problems focusing. I would start projects, but never finish them. I was sitting in front of my computer with the best intentions to get things done, but after two hours of sitting there I would realize I hadn’t made the progress I was intending to. How was I going to get myself out of this and into a productive mindset?

I started the 20 minute hour. 20 minutes in each area of life, and even if I wasn’t finished with a project, after those 20 minutes I would wrap it up and keep moving. 20 minutes for cleaning the house, 20 minutes to self care: either taking a shower or doing your nails etc, and ending the hour with 20 minutes of working online. Why had I not thought of this sooner!

In that hour I got more done than I had in the last two days. I knew my mind was going to have to work because in 20 minutes it was time to move weather I liked it or not.

Personally, I’ve found that if I do the computer time 20 minutes last then I can the freedom of zoning into a project, but I know that I can’t go to youtube and zone because I only have 20 minutes. I call it tricking your mind into being productive. It’s also amazing how much of your home can be cleaned in 20 minutes if that’s all you’re doing!

Here are some ideas to get you started

IDEAS FOR YOUR 20 MINUTE HOUR

  • PUT A LOAD OF DISHES IN THE DISHWASHER

  • SWEEP THE PORTCH

  • VACUME THE HOUSE

  • CUT THE GRASS

  • SWAP OUT THE LINENS ON YOUR BED

  • ORGANIZE YOUR CLSET

  • TEAMWORK AND PUT AWAY ALL THE KIDS TOYS

  • PUT A LOAD IN THE WASHING MACHINE

  • CHECK YOUR EMAILS, AND RESPOND!

  • DUST

  • DEEP CLEAN THE BATHROOM

  • START OF THAT PAPER YOU’VE BEEN PUTTING OFF

  • HANG UP A WALL COLLAGE

  • TRY ON CLOTHES TO SEE IF THEY STILL FIT AND IF YOU LIKE THEM

  • PAY ALL OF YOUR BILLS FOR THIS MONTH

  • TAKE A BATH

  • READ TO CLEAR YOUR MIND

  • CURL YOUR HAIR

  • LEARN SOMETHING ONLINE ABOUT YOUR PASSION

  • MOVE THE FURNITURE AROUND

  • WASH YOUR CAR

  • FIND 10 ITEMS AND PLACE THEM IN YOUR CAR FOR DONATION

  • BAKE MUFFINS OR A LOAF OF BREAD

Another wonderful benefit of this hour is that you don’t have time check your phone. You’re having an entire hour where you are being so proactive that you don’t have time to scroll. What a wonderful blessing! I’ve learned how attached I am to that little thing, and I don't like it! I don’t like that I feel the need to check it every time there is a notification.

With being a “crumple person” basically I love crumpling the paper that has my “to-dos” on it and trowing it away, I’ve found the 20 minute hour to be one that I feel very satisfied after accomplishing. I know I’ve made progress on my work because I’ve had to solely focus on it with no distractions. I can crumple those sticky notes and throw them away because I’ve completed projects that have been on my mind for weeks, or I’ve at least started on them!

What will you do with your 20 minute hour?

You are the ONLY You that will Ever You!

Be Your Quirky Wonderful Self! - AVintageJoy

I recently read THIS POST by CupofJo and it really hit me. I love so many aspects of people and I really want to learn all that I can from other's experiences, but I truly believe the unique aspects of ourselves are the thing that makes us so unique. I know that sounds kinda like a "duh" statement, but remember when you were a kid? Remember all of those unique aspects of yourself being the thing that other kids tried to make you feel bad for?

I've been told things, even in my adult life like "you really shouldn't make so many jokes if you're running a meeting" **I made two jokes in an hour's time**. Those things, if we're not careful change the unique aspects about us that are the reason why we're where we are in the first place.

Yes, we should always be maturing and growing as a person, but those special aspects of ourselves that others saw and loved, are also the aspects that others will see and want to change.

I saw a poster that said "You can't make everyone happy, you're not coffee" Preach! I'm not here to try to appease everyone I come in contact with, there are going to be people that we just don't have to be best friends with, and that is ok! We're meant to love people to the best of our ability, but it is also a two way street. If you're going to be friends with someone they have to buy into that as well.

It can be very easy to start to be someone else's version of you. Don't! Your loud laugh, or quirky jokes, or curly hair, are all meant to be that way on purpose. Be proud of your freckles, don't cover them up! Be yourself, don't spend your time trying to be "the cool kid." What does that even mean anyways, cool is defined by whatever the masses say is cool right now. Remember when Jocks, then Nerds, then Social Media Influencers became cool?

It changes so much, just focus on being you! You're the best and only you that will ever you. Do yourself the justice of being that!

May Goals (10 in 30)

May Goals - 2018 - AVintageJoy

I "May" be a little late, see what I did there. But here we go! NSYNC got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, and "It's gunna be May" meme is alive and well, all is right with the world. If you haven't seen the meme you should look it up, and if you have you'll already know I posted about it on my instagram story! Now that it's half way through May, what are my goals...

1// Make one video. I've really been wanting to start with videos because it is so much fun to look back and see my travels through videos.

2// Get enough sLeEp (do you remember when we used to do that online) not sure how I just thought of it, but yeah get enough sleep. I have a super bad habit of sleeping too little!

3// Read One book from start to finish. I'm pretty bad at reading honestly, but I know it will help me mentally. This month I will complete this!

4// Learn and apply four new things about editing pictures. I think editing is so much fun, but some of those presets are so expensive. Youtube school it is!

5// Fully move into my new place. It has been a long road and a tiring one, but with all Jesus and none of me, I have a new place!! I'm so grateful!

6// Have a "new place party" I can't think of the actual word for that.

7// Start an actual workout routine. Work has been more and more stressful and I need to find a way to "work" through the stress of it all. I've heard wonderful things about working out. I'm going to try that! Maybe I'll walk or run around my neighborhood?

8// Don't hate me but.....Renew my passport! And yes ladies and gentlemen if you're following along that is the third time this goal has been on my monthly goals *face palm*

9// Find ways to relax. As work becomes more and more stressful it's important for me to find new ways to relax. The other day I was at brunch with friends and consciously realized that it was the first time I had really felt relaxed in a while. I honestly still can't think of a time recently that I felt that relaxed, that's sad!

10// Keep my identity in line. There are so many incorrect aspects that try to talk into our lives, sometimes out of the best hearts, but they're incorrect. They try to tell us what our identity is in and what it should be in, but I know the truth! My identity is not in my job, nor should it be! I always want to do my best in anything I do, but if something goes wrong at work that does not change who my identity is as a person! I need to remember what defines me, and who has the authority to define me!

Why Good Habits Matter

Creating good habits is so important to make sure that you're on the right path! This is Why good habits matter!

Creating good habits is so important to make sure that you're on the right path. Having a goal and creating habits that move you towards your goals are one and the same. If you can't create those positive habits, but you really really want to accomplish your goals, you're really setting yourself up for failure. Goals that are worth striving for, sometimes have roadblocks and hard seasons associated with them; good habits are the thing that make the difference in those hard times.

Let us start at the beginning:

The definition of a habit according to Webster (also my autocorrect keeps wanting to put Hobbit and that just makes me happy):

"An acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary"

"The prevailing disposition or character of a person's thoughts and feelings"

I love that both of these really describe the fact that a habit is something that we don't just have out of nowhere, it's something that we have to work to have. It's something that has to "prevail" over the other things we want to do.

One of the main reasons that people don't accomplish their goals is because the habits that need to be the backbone of those goals isn't there. We start on our goals and when something goes wrong (*cough* which it will at some point *cough*) we don't have the habits to get though the hard times.

But how do you create a habit? And what does that practically look like?

You remind yourself why this is important. You remind yourself of the "why" behind your goals. You say out loud why this is important. Why you doing this gets you closer to your goals, and you keep going!

Keep spending those ten minutes before bed reading your Bible even when you feel stagnant, because it is those habits that lead you deeper in your relationship with God! You keep trying to write your screenplay because you feel that your story matters, and it will help someone in their season of life! You strive to have two days off a week because you know how important it is to your mental health to have a moment of release.

Remind yourself of the "why" behind your habit. You are the best and only you that will ever you. Give yourself the best shot at your goals, by being honest with yourself. Are you putting in the effort and creating the habits that get you a step closer to your goals? Are you giving you your best shot!? Are you focused on the correct goals? That's an entirely different post, but it's another important question to ask.

What habit are you working through right now that you can focus on continuing? Is there a habit in your life the you should really let go of? Are you creating habits that move you towards your longterm and short term goals?

10 Ways to Turn Around A "Bad Day"

Not every morning is a magical morning. Here are some tips and tricks to help you when you're starting to have a bad day.

There are some days of the year that you wake up and everything feels like a wonderful hallmark movie. The kind where the light streams perfectly into your bedroom. You wake up to a crisp morning where you have nowhere to be and nothing on the calendar, other than things you want to do.

But there are also mornings where you wake up and you didn't realize, but you are out of coffee filers. You forgot to put your clothes out the night before so now you have five minutes to put together an outfit before going to work. And then, after you're too far to turn around, you realize you forgot the coffee, you had to scrounge together, at your house.

On those harder mornings here are a few things to help:

1// Remind yourself of the positive. Write on your mirror, or on the back of your door, an encouraging word to read outloud to yourself before you leave the house.

2// Wear your favorite perfume. This is definitely a go to for me! On the mornings where I wake up and I don't really "feel like it," I put on my favorite scent and it reminds me of travel and fun days and I immediately have a little moral boost .

3// Remember that every day is new, today is what you make of it! And if it sucks, there's a new try tomorrow. You can have a bad moment of your day, but that moment doesn't have to define your day! Take a quick lap around the block and clear your head.

4// Close your eyes and breath slowly three times. Balance out your breathing, its the simple things that help turn your day around.

5// Drink a glass of water. Sometimes it's just you being dehydrated from the night before that makes you a little more cranky.

6// Give yourself something to look forward to at the end of your work day. You can stop on the way home from work and pick up food for dinner, or go out with a friend for a drink.

7// Go to bed early that night. If you're not having the best day, set yourself up for success tomorrow and get a good night sleep!

8// Drink a cambucha or probiotic drink. Do something small that's good for your body. Keep your stomach happy!

9// Do something at the end of the day that makes you feel pampered. Do a quick 5 minute face mask, or make yourself a cup of chamomile tea before going to bed.

10// Do something that switches up the way you think. Two hours before going to bed, put down the social media and pick up a book, or paint something when you get home. When was the last time you painted something? For me, I honestly don't remember.

What are your tips and tricks? Share them in the comment section, I would love to know how you turn your mind around when you're having a "bad day."
