Adulting is hard. It's easy to become overwhelmed and distracted. I don't know about you guys, but my life recently has become a big ball of stress, but stress isn't bad if you know how to handle it. Here are 5 things you can start doing tonight to help you relax and refocus.
DRINK A SLEEPY TIME TEA BEFORE BED
I love love coffee! But there is always room for tea in my life. This is something I really wish I did more consistently. On nights when I come home and want to refocus and watch some T.V. or read a book to help my mind relax, it's so wonderful to have some calming tea. Chamomile is a great solution for a night tea, try to steer clear of tea that has a lot of caffeine in it though because that could have the opposite effect of what you want.
TURN OFF THE TV OR THE COMPUTER
I notice when I've had a really stressful day and then I come home and spend the moments right before bed on the computer my mind takes longer to turn off and slow down when I'm trying to sleep. Being so connected to technology right before trying to sleep isn't always the best way to calm your mind, especially on a stressful day. Try reading or journaling before bed as an alternative! You choose what your mind focuses on, if you’re having a stressful week, choose to give your mind the topics that don’t overwhelm it.
GO SOMEWHERE TO UNWIND
Sometimes going straight home after work isn't the best way to unwind after a stressful day. If you are able to get off of work in time to watch the sunset, or meet up with some friends for a drink it can be a better transition to help your mind calm down from a busy day. We think sometimes, that isolating ourselves calms us down but think about your personality. What do you find energy and calm from? Whatever that is, try to work it into your day.
GO TO BED EARLY
I remember as a kid when I was in trouble I would be sent to my room to go to bed early, and I hated it. Now there are nights when I send myself to my room to go to sleep early. If your body is tired, making sure you're giving it the proper amount of sleep is better for your mood and your health. Also, why did we all hate naps so much as kids?Sometimes my favorite part of a day is when I can take a nap!
WRITE DOWN YOUR BLESSINGS
When we get stressed, the part of our brain that remembers all the good in our lives gets drowned out. When you're stressed remember all in your life that is a blessing. Whatever it is, write it down. When you stop focusing on all the negative and remember how truly blessed you are, you're restructuring how you handle stress. You’re also training your brain what to focus on. Where you focus will become how you think.
Even in the difficult times if we’re focusing on the mountain instead of putting on our hiking books all we’ll end up doing is looking up. If we start to climb that mountain, we’ll eventually be looking down and realize how far we’ve come. One step at a tie!
